Prior to Playstations: 200 years of adventure novels in Portugal - From October 23, 2003 to January 24, 2004

Beginning in October 2003, Biblioteca Nacional will be participating in the commemoration of bicentenary of the birth of Alexandre Dumas – author of a body of work filled with heroes and a notable reference in adventure literature, especially the cape-and-sword genre – by organizing an exposition and a publication of a catalogue entitled: Prior to Playstations: 200 years of adventure novels in Portugal.

With the aim of studying the roots and diffusion of this “paraliterary” genre, which has received little attention from scholars, adventure literature by its pioneering character is responsible for the formation of generations of readers; we propose to catalogue the more preponderant foreign authors whose works have been translated into Portuguese (Dumas, Jules Verne, Emilio Salgari, Karl May, Arturo Pérez-Reverte), as well as a correspondent Portuguese works. This initiative also seeks to comprehend the cultural circumstances in which such literature originated and continues to be produced.

The chosen title is concerned with the projection of adventure literature from its beginnings, its expansion, and its later transmigration to alternative/complementary forms in regards to the novel as a form. A chronology may be established that traces from the second half of the 18th century to the last decade of the 20th century when the emergence of the Internet in all its forms facilitated new dimensions for entertainment.

The catalogue integrates 1000 inscriptions preceded by articles authored by Ernesto Rodrigues (“Alexandre the Conqueror), Fernando Guerreiro (“Alexandre Dumas: the passion is the adventure), José Augusto França, and Claude Schopp, a recognized authority on Alexandre Dumas. A brief article authored by some of the Biblioteca Nacional work group addressing the definitions of "paraliterature" and its expression in Portuguese works of the genre will be included. Integrated into the Bibliography Series of editions at the Biblioteca Nacional, the catalogue will certainly become an indispensable reference on the reception of Dumas’s literature in Portugal and the most complete repertoire of adventure literature in Portugal.

The exposition will last from October 2003 to January 2004 and will expound upon three distinct nuclei ( Alexandre Dumas’s work, foreign author’s writings on the subject, and Portuguese works relating to the same), seeking to accompany the more representative authors and texts, as well as the more pertinent themes associated with the imaginary exotics of the plots: the exotic historical, geographical, and social. In addition to the display of the novels available in the collection of the Biblioteca Nacional, enlarged cover art by Portuguese illustrators will also be shown. Selections from the libraries of the museums Militar and Brinquedo were included to strengthen the exposition. This initiative is sponsored by Playstation, Portucel, S.A., Instituto Cervantes, and Cinemoteca Portuguesa- Museu do Cinema.

In the scope of this initiative a website will be unveiled which will integrate the catalogue, a selection of the illustrations from the cover art, biographies of the authors, and an online visit to the exposition itself.
